This week's discussion posting focuses on Chapter 5 from Understanding Movies, "Sound."
The chapter does a good job of exploring the many dimensions of sound -- from the actors' tone, inflection, and voice timber to the soundtrack to the sound effects.
Because you have so many movies to choose from (your selections as well as mine) you should find it simple to choose a scene for this exercise. The examples I chose for the Sound learning module are darker in tone and more somber than some films, but I think they work well too. Sound has power when used for both extremes of purpose, from the light-hearted to the tragic.
For your posting this week, choose a scene from the movie you watched this week and talk about the sound elements you identify. How do they reinforce the mood of the scene? How do they support the plot? The characters?
