Characteristics of several populations with disabilities

Assignment:

Background: We have discussed, read about, and completed activities about the characteristics of several populations with disabilities, and we have also read about and discussed issues with labeling. Many of you have said and written in your journals that people with disabilities are really just like everyone else, and others have used the label "differently abled" or "people with exceptionalities."

However, some people with disabilities don't prefer these last two "names" because they feel they don't portray the challenges and difficulties they face.

Where do you stand with regard to labeling?

Directions: Choose one population that you are interested in and do the following:

1. Explain in whether or not you feel that the label for this population portrays a fair and accurate description of the people with that label. And as you do so, be specific and refer to the specific characteristics of that population to make your points. And you should discuss both the positive and negative aspects of the label and then come to a conclusion.

2. If you feel that by and large that label is not fair or accurate, is there another way t hat you think they should be referred to? Explain your answer.
