Overview
In this course, you learn about the various types of exceptionalities in the field of special education. The media evaluation assignment requires you to analyze and compare media and how individuals with exceptionalities are portrayed in order to determine if accurate portrayal reflects the nature and needs of those individuals as defined by the field of special education.
Learner Outcomes
1. Identify characteristics of an exceptionality portrayed in the media.
2. Summarize important scholarly information (textbook and at least one additional source) related to theexceptionality.
3. Compare and contrast characteristics of the exceptionality from the media and professional sources.
4. Generate implications for future practice in special education to raise awareness or teach about the exceptionality.
Directions
Students will view one media source that includes a character with an exceptionality. After viewing the media source, students will write a paper using the outline provided.
Outline for the Paper
Introduction
Provide a rationale for selection of media and exceptionality. Identify area of exceptionality, media title, and character with exceptionality.
Characteristics of Exceptionality
Describe media portrayal of character with exception ality through physical, cognitive, social, and emotional characteristics. Describe the exceptionality from professional sources through physical, cognitive, social, and emotional characteristics.
Analysis of Characteristics
Compare and contrast the characteristics (physical, cognitive, social, and emotional) of the exceptionality as portrayed in the media and through professional sources.
Implications for Future Practice
Generate learning activities incorporating media to raise awareness or teach about the exceptionality.
