Read the following selections in The Canterbury Tales, and then answer the questions in Part I & Part II. Indicate which number question you are answering. Follow the Style Sheet and be sure to cite correctly.

o The Tale of the Wife of Bath (prologue and the tale)
o The Franklins Tale
o The Tale of the Miller (prologue and the tale)
o One other tale of your choosing

Part 1:

In your responses, quote briefly and refer by page to relevant passages of the reading. Be sure your answers to the questions total at least 100 words each. Do not give a summary of the book or situation, but how you feel about the question in relation to the text (a critical analysis).

1. Who is the main audience for this novel? Do you feel that the book was successful in reaching that audience? Why? Based on your reading of this text, what was important to the audience this book was aimed at? Why?

2. To what extent is the Wife of Bath’s Prologue (and even her Tale) a response to clerical attitudes toward marriage and virginity?

3. Trace the steps in the Wife of Bath’s arguments for the rightness of marriage (and, specifically, of her own five marriages). How does she use written authorities to support her own actions and world view?

4. Consider the ways in which the Franklin’s Tale offers alternatives to a typical “courtly love” relationship. Does Chaucer’s vision coincide with traditional views of “courtly love” or of marriage? Where/how does it differ?

Part II:

Compose several questions about the tale you chose, as if you were making a reading log for someone who had just read the text. Thinking about the entire novel, make three good questions for each of the following question types. There should be a total of nine (9) questions when you are done.

1. Important fact question
2. Cause and effect question
3. Moral Issues Question
