Gawain, the hero of the tale, undertake a perilous quest for honor, but he is, ultimately, guilty of three crimes by the end of the narrative. What are these crimes and what events lead to these offenses? How do these crimes and circumstances provide a critical discourse on the cultures, themes and ideologies represented by the text? Why is the Green Knight himself significant? Once you establish your line of reasoning with the necessary support, you will also need to consider: in what ways is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, its themes and ideologies relevant today? Or more specifically, can fourteenth century discourses on gender, power and prostheses shape the way we understand and implement these concepts in the present?
