Paper instructions:
5 pages minimum, spell checked, and printed on a computer printer. Paper must be stapled! 12-point font size, all borders must be 1-inch or smaller. Please write your name on each additional piece of support materials and documentation. If you quote online or other sources, you must note this with quotation marks, and a list of footnotes at the end of the paper to identify the sources. If you are discussing a specific image, please provide that image, a black and white printout is fine. The page for references does not count as one of the 5 page minimum.
Focus in a specific area, photographer, or movement, that way your topic isn’t too broad.
I mentioned “Compare and Contrast” when I talked about the research paper. This is a great way to look at a subject, for example, find two documentary photographers of the same period and compare and contrast their approaches, subject, way of working, methods, etc. Nadar was the Leibowitz of his time, were there other photographers that were contemporaries of Nadar? How does his work stand up to modern portraiture? In the documentary mode, Henri Cartier Bresson worked at the same time as Robert Capa, W. Eugene Smith, Chim, Carl Mydans, among others. In the 60’s we see the rise of color being used for documentary work. Does the use of color impact the subject and how it’s absorbed by culture?
