Instructions:
1. Use the article by Fergusson to answer the following questions. Describe the target population, the study population, and the sample that was used in the study.
• How was the initial sample of patients collected?
• Can the final study be generalized to the entire population of high-risk cardiac surgery?
• What was the outcome measure(s) that the authors were examining?
• Are the experimental groups similar?
? Describe how you reached this conclusion?
? What are the major differences between the groups?
? Would you expect the experimental groups to be similar?
• Interpret the following sentence: "In the aprotinin group, the relative risk of any red-cell transfusion was 0.82 (95% CI, 0.75 to 0.89) as compared with the tranexamic acid group."
2. Read the article by Backer et al and then consider the following:
• Answer the same questions outlined in Question # 1
• Compare this study to the study discussed in Question #1.
? Are the two studies comparable?
? Which study do you trust for younger patients?
• In the results section the authors claimed that "The Aprotinin group was younger" and supplied a p-value of 0.019. Describe the null and alternative hypothesis and the testing steps that the authors used to reach this conclusion.
3. Read this article by Karkouti et al and then consider the following:
• How was the initial sample of patients collected?
• Can the final study be generalized to the entire population of high-risk cardiac surgery?
• What was the outcome measure(s) that the authors were examining?
• Calculate the 95% confidence interval for the mean age of the Aprotinin group (use Table 1).
• Calculate the 95% confidence interval for the proportion of people with Diabetes mellitus in the Aprotinin group (use Table 1).
• Thinking about the studies discussed in Questions 1 and 2, is this study comparable to any of the previous studies?
? If it is comparable, are the result similar?
? What could be possible reasons for the differences?
Interpret the relationship between in-hospital death and Aprotinin use
