Can Kratom be utilized for the treatment of pain? "Kratom is a tree from the coffee family native to Southeast Asia. Also known as Mitragyna speciosa, it's grown in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia" (Gatta). Traditionally, as a home remedy, kratom has been used to treat fatigue, pain, diarrhea, and muscle cramps. "Very little research has been done on the health effects of kratom. To date, kratom has not been found to be safe or effective for any use" (Gatta). This statement identifies that kratom has not undergone sufficient study to scientifically claim results of use. Another statement is "Early studies suggest that kratom may have potential as an antidepressant and a hunger suppressant" (Gatta). Again, the author uses vague language and shows no evidence of scientific support to the use of kratom. A statement that potentially shows real scientific study is "In another study with rats, kratom supplementation suppressed hunger by inhibiting the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for appetite and cravings" (Gatta). This shows that there has been a study performed on rats and the results were observed. Whereas, utilizing a peer-reviewed scholarly source, it is clearer and more evident that there are accounted deaths and hospitalizations and a lack of research completed to accurately assess kratom.
