Calculate the hydrostatic pressure

Biological organisms live at great depths in the ocean and they have adapted their bodies to survive at extreme temperatures and pressures in the dark. One of the adaptations is to equilibrate their internal pressure with the external pressure.

a) Calculate the hydrostatic pressure at a depth of 2000 m. Express your answer in atm.

The density of ocean water is 1.025 kg/L.

b) Let's model an organism as a balloon filled with O2. At 1 atm pressure, the balloon has a volume of 1 L. What is the volume of the balloon at a depth of 2000 m? The temperature at a depth of 2000 m is 4 ºC.

c) State one adaptation the organism would have to make to survive these conditions.
