The ground state 1s1 H atom has two hyperfine states, F = 0 and F = 1, which correspond to different relative orientations of the nuclear spin and electron spin. The transition between these two states has a wavelength of 21 cm and is one of the most important transitions in observational astronomy. The shape of our galaxy and many of its other properties were determined by measurements of this transition. Calculate the fraction of H atoms in each of these states at a temperature of 100 K. he F = 1 state is the ground state and there are no other states with significant population.
