Calculate the equilibrium conversion and the cstr and pfr

Problem 1. The elementary liquid phase reaction A + B-> C is carried out in a 500 dm3 reactor. The entering concentrations of streams A and B are both 2-molar and the specific reaction rate is 0.01 dm3/(mol*min).

a Calculate the time to reach 90% conversion if the reactor is a batch reactor filled to the brim.

Assuming a stoichiometric feed (10 mol A/min) to a continuous flow reactor; calculate the reactor volume and space-time to achieve 90% conversion if the reactor is

b. a CSTR

c. a PFR

d. Redo (a) through (c) assuming the reaction is first-order in B and zero-order in A with k = 0.01 /min.

e. Assume the reaction is reversible with Ke = 2 dm3/Mol. Calculate the equilibrium conversion and the CSTR and PFR volumes necessary to achieve 98% of the equilibrium conversion.

Problem 2. You are in charge of the production of specialty chemicals for your organization and an order comes in for 3 lb of brominated p-chlorophenyl isopropyl ether. You decide to use the technique reported by Bradfield et al. [J. Chem. Soc., 1389 (1949)], who carried out the reaction in 75% acetic acid at 68oF.

You have a batch reactor that holds 5 gal (0.670 ft3 ) of a reacting mixture that can be used. Starting out with a mixture that contains 0,002 lb mol (0.34 Ib) of p-chlorophenyl isopropyl ether and 0.0018 lb mol (0.288 Ib) of bromine in the 5 gal, you decide to run 10 batches of the mixture to 65% conversion of the p-chlorophenyl isopropyl ether. This procedure will give the desired 3 lb.

How long will each batch take?

Reaction :  2A + B -> 2C

where A is p-chlorophenyl isopropyl ether, B is bromine, and C is monobrominated product

Rate Law: rA = -(k-,CACB + k2CACB2

Specific reaction rates at 68 F:

K1= 1.98 ft3 , /lb mol middot min

K2 = 9.2 x103 (ft3 /lb mol)2middot min-1
