A beam has a solid square cross section of 100mm and simply supported by two supports 3 metres apart. Calculate the dead load that can be safely supported when applied to the midle of the beam. The correct formula from my teacher:
M = WL/4 = Wx3/4
Z = I/Y = (d^4/12) / (d/2) = d^3/6
Now use these 3 formulas(below) to rearrange and substitute to find W
sigma = M/Z
Z = d^3/6
M = 3W/4
