Calculate length of heating period and temperature of rubber


A large slab of hard rubber 1 in. thick and initially at 20 degreecelcius is placed between two heated steel plates maintained at 140deg. celcius. The heating is to be discontinued when thetemperature at the mid plane of the slab reaches 130 deg.celcius. The rubber has a thermal conductivity of 0.15 W/m-Kand a thermal diffusivity of 8.8 x10-8m2/s. The thermal contact resistance between the steel plate and the rubber is negligible.Calculate the following: a. length of the heating period b. the temperature of the rubber at a distance 1/4 in. from one of the steel plates at the end of the heating period c. the time required for the temperature at a distance 1/4in. from one of the steel plates to reach 103 deg. celcius.
