Business intelligence and data warehousing assignment

Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing Assignment

Brief: Acquire a dataset from a free source such as Dublinked, or Kaggle, or by searching online for yourself.

Once you have acquired your data, you must design a data warehouse to store this data in an efficient manner using a dimensional model.

When designed, you will implement this data warehouse in Microsoft SQL Server or another suitable DBMS and develop a series of reports which probe this data in a non-trivial manner.

Your reporting must demonstrate an understanding of the subject domain of the data, as well as the characteristics of the data itself.

While not necessary to do well in this assignment, appropriate (and correct) use of data visualisations, statistical analysis or use of data mining would be impressive as these are all integral parts of business intelligence output.

Submission Details You will be required to submit a written report (detailed below).

Your report should contain details of your all your work, for example:

  • Processes, Methodologies & Techniques used
  • An Initial dataset characteristics report
  • Data Quality report / Data Cleansing work - How you transformed the data to a dimensional model
  • Design Documents (e.g. ERD, Star Schema) for the Data Warehouse & Reports
  • Report Output
  • The rationale for the reports you created, and what value or significance these reports bring
  • Reflective analysis: What worked, what did not work

Project Deliverables -

Your project will be assessed on the following submissions. A 3000 word written report incorporating the following elements

  • Design documents for data warehouse
  • Design documents for reports
  • Rationale (business or research) for the reports that are presented
  • Presentation of the results of the report
  • Explanation of the significance of those reports

Recommended project milestones -

These milestones are intended as a guideline to students as to the timeline for the project, and are accompanied by in-class sessions during which the student will be expected to demonstrate the progress of their project to the requisite standard.

Project milestone 1

  • Identify an appropriate dataset
  • Characterise the data within that dataset
  • Understand the data domain to an appropriate level to generate meaningful queries
  • Sketch an outline of what elements are most significant in that data

Project Milestone 2

  • Design a Data Warehouse structure suitable for the dataset chosen
  • Implement some level of prototype of the DW
  • Sketch meaningful, NON-TRIVIAL queries to the DW
  • Evidence of planning and strategic choices being documented

General structure of a project report:

This document is intended to provide a guide on how to structure a report for most projects related to the analysis and visualisation of data. In some modules you will be given specific structures to follow, in which case that structure will supersede this one, but this may still be useful when considering what needs to be shown.

These guidelines are just that - guidelines.  In almost all projects, some of the suggested headings are not entirely relevant, and in others you may find some headings work better in other sections.  Feel free to play about with the structure to suit the narrative flow of your project.

A good, snappy version of all of this is to use the process "Say what you're going to say, Say it, then Say it again!"
