Watch the documentary film entitled 13th directed by Ava DuVernay, 2016 (open here). This film considers how (and why) American prisons statistically imprison Black men disproportionately. After you have viewed the film, answer the following two questions. Each response should be approximately 1/2 page
• The film argues that there is a direct link between American slavery and the modern American prison system. Briefly summarize DuVernay's position on this issue. Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
• Prior to seeing the film, were you aware of the corporate interest group ALEC? After having seen the film, how do you feel about ALEC? Do you agree or disagree with the notion that corporate interests shape the prison population? Explain.
