The use of edu, gov etc in a website domain generally is helpful in determining the validity of information presented on a website and yes it may also have some bias. Edu domains are owned by the educational system, gov is government owned and we tend to accept information located on these sites without question. There are private owned companies that attempt to simulate information found on these sites and many times individuals may accidentally access a private owned site and may accept/obtain incorrect information. For instance, www.irs.gov is a totally different web site than www.irs.org (private owned). While one may be able to locate the same information on both sites one should be careful in relying on information from the "org" site because it is not the actual IRS site. Why do you think a private company would have a domain that is that similar to the domain of another company? What would be the advantages/disadvantages of such similar web addresses?
