Because we are exposed to varying forms of media each day, this project focuses on one example of media that is of personal significant, impact, or curiosity.
Creativity, experimentation, collaboration, and transgression are all central to the field of women's studies and to feminist pedagogy. It is important to apply these learned skills when analyzing media.
· analyze gender as a social, historical, and cultural construction rather than as a natural biological fact in order to challenge stereotypes and to create alternatives to current constructions of power and inequality
· identify differences among women and women's multiple, intersecting identities in order to understand different women's experiences across geography and history
· apply knowledge of local and global issues and debates in women's studies to effect positive change in women's lives
Essay Instructions
1. Choose a specific form of news media (ex, newspapers, newsmagazines, radio, television, online newspaper, news blogs, etc.) you believe would prove useful in a discussion in a women's studies course.
2. Analyze this form of news media by utilizing the course materials for support, make explicit connections between your chosen form of news media and women's studies. Be sure to cite your sources.
3. Search for outside scholarly sources (such as journals and books) to support and back up your analysis.
4. Use at least 2 outside sources written within the last ten years, but base your essay primarily on the course materials.
