Digital Communication
Purpose of the assessment:
The purpose of this assignment is to understand the application of waveform coding techniques for digital audio transmission and digital audio recording, develop skills on information gathering, write technical reports.
Students will:
a. Have capabilities in requirements of real world case study
b. Have skills to critically review, consolidate, analyse, synthesis knowledge of overall system
c. Be able to understand and apply technical skills to real information technology applications
d. Be able to write technical report
Description of the assessment:
1. Background
Digital audio has become an integral part of our lives. Nearly all of the transmission of speech signals over telephone channels is currently digital. Moreover, digital audio recording in the form of compact disks (CDs) have become very popular. This assignment exposes the student to a real world applications of digital communication in digital audio transmission and recoding. In doing so the student shall acquire skills to understand the real world requirements, critically review the existing techniques and write a technical report based on his or her investigation.
2. Requirements This assignment shall address the following three areas:
- Requirements: In this section the student is required to analyze the following for digital audio in telephone transmission systems;
1) bandwidth of speech signals and the required sampling rates to avoid aliasing,
2) required number of bits per sample to achieve voice quality in telephony,
3) typical bit rates used for local loops as well as on trunked lines; In this section the student is also required to analyze the following for digital audio recording ;
1) bandwidth of high quality audio and the required sampling rates,
2) required number of bits per sample to achieve a high signal to quantization noise level for high quality audio.
- Investigation of current methods: In this section the student is required to review and analyse waveform coding techniques used in digital audio transmission and recording at present. At least PCM and DPCM methods need to be covered.
- Investigation of new developments: In this section the student is required to do some research into the latest developments in waveform coding techniques for digital audio transmission and recoding.
Suggested approach:
1. The student is required to analyse the requirements for digital audio transmission.
2. The student is encouraged to do a literature review on current practices of waveform coding for digital audio transmission and recoding.
3. The student is required to write a technical report on requirements, review and analysis on the use of waveform coding techniques in digital audio transmission and recoding.
Consider on referencing specially and also page format should be normal single column.
