Assume you own a consulting company that designs, installs, and maintains wide area networks. You currently have two companies requesting bids for their wide area networks to be installed. You must provide all of the relevant information to the companies so that they can make an informed decision on what to do.
Alpha Company is a relatively small advertising company with offices in Houston, Dallas, and New Orleans. Each office employs 20 people, some of which travel nationally for their job.
Beta Company is a relatively large paper supply company with 20 offices nationally in cities such as New York, Chicago, and Seattle. Five of the offices have remote work centers (an office 10-20 miles outside the city where the office is located where employees can work some days of the week instead of fighting the traffic into the main office). A total of 3,000 employees are spread throughout the 20 offices. Most of the 200 salespeople travel nationally.
Assume that neither company has an existing WAN in place. For each company, you should design a proposal to implement a WAN. Since these companies aren't familiar with WANs, you need to provide them with a lot of information.
• First, you should explain basically what a WAN is and how they operate. Then, provide each company with a plan on how to connect their offices together . As part of this, you should include the protocol(s) to use and a justification for using that particular protocol(s).
• You must also consider the security. As we have learned, security is a multifaceted issue. Consider how you will secure the LANs and the connections for the remote workers. Don't forget about the nontechnical security concerns as well.
• When complete, you will have a proposal for each company on how you propose to design their WAN, provide remote access for workers, and secure the network.
