Association between family member opioid prescription


Discussion Problem: This study investigated the association between family member opioid prescription and an individual having an OUD among individuals with commercial insurance. Most individuals in our sample did not have a previous claim for a non-opioid substance use disorder. These individuals had higher odds of having an OUD diagnosis if they had a family member with an opioid prescription. Spouses and employees had higher odds of having an OUD diagnosis than adolescent and young adult dependents. There are Conclusions Opioids prescribed to family members are associated with an elevated risk of developing OUD for other members of the family.
