Assignment task: Rhetorical Analysis of Visual Rhetoric
This assignment will require you to assess the rhetorical effectiveness of a given "text" based on your analysis of the rhetorical appeals used and whether or not that effectiveness is persuasive in nature. You will demonstrate your understanding of the Aristotelian principles of Ethos, Logos and Pathos as you apply these rhetorical appeals in your analysis.
Find a visual text you want to analyze
Pick a visually-centered text that you find interesting. This can be anything as long as it's visual (using pictures, images, or graphics) and persuasive (is trying to convince or persuade you, to buy something, to believe something, to do something). You can write about an infographic (chart, tale, graph), an advertisement, a public service announcement, a Powerpoint presentation, a comic or graphic novel (an excerpt, if it's a lengthy text), or even a meme. It can be print or nonprint. (It's probably easier to find a text on the Internet for this essay, so please feel free to do that.) If print, please scan a copy to send along with your paper. If nonprint, please provide a URL in your heading to indicate where I can access the source.
