This is a research essay. Pick one of the following topics:

1.) Using an example or two of your own preference (e.g. something you already participate in), discuss the key factors (e.g. how media producers coordinate their activities and how fans share and circulate stuff via multiple channels) that are shaping transmedia activity.

2.) Assess some of the common criticisms of gaming. How might we think of games and gaming culture differently? What are some of its possibilities?

3.) Discuss the ways in which social networking is changing the ways in which we manage privacy and enter into public engagement with others, and the ways in which it is shaping how we make sense of self-identity and construct public personas.

If you like you can choose to focus your discussion on the example of selfies by considering some of the criticisms of selfies, and how we might be able to think of them more positively.

- We will be having workshops in class over the course of the trimester to help you come up with and refine your topic.

- The essay must be completed in formal academic style including citations and a reference list.

- It is crucial that your research essay is fully referenced. The preferred system of referencing is the Harvard system. This includes accurately documenting internet and other electronic sources.

- In developing the essay, you must make significant use of ALC105 unit content and related reading.

- You will need an introduction that will overview what your essay will focus on as well as a strong concluding paragraph.
