You are a freelance computer consultant providing desktop support to a client, Ralph, with a small business network that you designed and installed. The network consists of five Windows 7 computers connected to a single switch, which is in turn connected to a DSL router, providing Internet access to all of the computers. Ralph calls to report that Internet Explorer is unable to connect to any site on the Internet.
Following are three tasks that you will ask Ralph to perform. Explain how each of the tasks can help you to isolate the component that is causing the problem:
1. Ask Ralph to open a Command Prompt window and try to ping a server on the Internet.
2. Ask Ralph to try to connect to a share on another one of the network's computers.
3. Ask Ralph to log on to one of the other computers on the network and try to access the Internet using Internet Explorer.
