Ask five of your friends for a personal definition of “family” and record their answers. Then, write a one- to two-page, double-spaced paper in which you consider the patterns and insights that emerge from these definitions. That is, what do these definitions have in common? Do same-sex partners constitute a family according to any of these definitions? Do single parents and their children constitute a family according to any of these definitions? How are these definitions of family reflected in popular culture? How are these definitions of family reflected in political discourse? Is it important to settle on one definition of family? Why or why not?
