Arrangement within the exhibition space


For your final project you will curate a theoretical, or cyber exhibition using the materials we have been discussing in class. You are encouraged to include paintings and materials we have not discussed in class, but must relate them to your central theme, and argue for their inclusion in your exhibition in your “Curatorial Proposal.”

PROJECT FORMAT:

1) TITLE OF EXHIBITION:

a) Should identify your “main idea,” or exhibition theme

b) Make a memorable and succinct title

2) CURATORIAL PROPOSAL (2500 words):

a) Identify the theme(s) of your show

b) Discuss how these artworks demonstrate your thesis

c) Why did you choose these works?

i) Make a persuasive argument for your ideas

d) Your proposal should draw on your research and include footnotes

3) VIRTUAL EXHIBITION OF INCLUDED WORKS:

a) You must include examples from the each of the three sections we have discussed in the course: Mughal, Deccani and Rajput

b) Your exhibition should include 20-30 artworks

c) Include an image of each artwork

d) Every artwork must have basic “tombstone label” information

i) Name of author (if known)

ii) Title of Work

iii) Date

iv) Where the artwork was produced (If known. Region, city, etc.),

v) Current location, including museum identification number (Metropolitan, British Museum, etc.)

vi) Cite your image source

e) Compile your list and images into a PowerPoint or PDF

4) WALL TEXTS:

a) An introduction to the exhibition (300-400 words)

b) Write for an audience of general public

5) FLOORPLAN AND EXHIBITION LAYOUT:

a) Use the PDF of the floorplan of the NYU Grey Gallery provided to layout the artworks in your exhibition

b) Consider how the visitor’s experience and narrative unfolds within the space: How does your arrangement within the exhibition space help express your exhibition theme?

c) Your PDF should make clear how will you display your artworks

i) Frames

ii) Vitrines

iii) Purpose-built cases

d) Identify the position of wall texts

6) CATALOG ENTRIES FOR FIVE IMPORTANT ARTWORKS (~250 words each):

a) Choose the most important works in your exhibition, prepare informational texts that could be included in a catalog

b) Discuss important background and how the artwork relates to your theme

c) What do you want the visitor to notice?

d) Use your descriptive skills and visual analysis

e) Use keywords
