Aristotle lists three appeals for a persuasive message-ethos, logos and pathos. Ethos goes to speaker credibility, e.g. “A good man speaking honestly”. Logos is an appeal to reason and/or logic while Pathos deals in stirring the emotions of the audience. Recent communication theorists have added Mythos, an appeal to the shared values of the audience. When Martin Luther King tells his audience to “rise up and live out the true meaning of their creed”, he is employing a mythos appeal that embodies all that we say and believe about our country, especially when it comes to equality and rights pertaining to citizens. What relative merit to you place on each of these? Is one "better" or more effective than another? Are these appeals likely to exist on their own or would they be partnered for effectiveness? What other factors influence our willingness to be persuaded?
