Apply concepts, ideas and theories introduced in given film

Assignment Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to apply the concepts, ideas and theories introduced in our Course to one of three films: Crash (law enforcement), Conviction (Crj system), and Shawshank Redemption (Corrections). You may also use Bryan Stevenson's Film Just Mercy which is now on Netflix and Xfinity. You may use his book to augment his content as not everything made it into the film version. Those taking the course for honors will fulfill that requirement by evaluating two films.

FORMAT - Students must use 20 different concepts or theories although clearly concepts will be repeated when needed. It would be a good idea to add additional concepts or theories from the lectures and text to the review sheet to help in your analysis. The paper should be between 6-8 pages although longer papers are always accepted, however shorter papers are probably not covering all the issues. A title page, and reference page-if needed as well as a short 1 paragraph introduction are required.

ORGANIZATION - As you watch the film, tag all the scenes which appear to cover a concept or theory covered in class. Its best to go through the film chronologically, and organize your paper in that way as well. Be careful not to narrate the story to make a point- wordiness can be an issue with this assignment. Watch carefully for an ending which either resolves, remains neutral or paints a negative picture of ethics in the institutions examined. Listen to the film's score(music) at the ending- is it upbeat or moody and downbeat? The score provides an enormous key to the concepts the Director is attempting to make. It is helpful to watch the film with your review sheet of concepts and theories and check them off as you see them in the film. Quotes are helpful in making your points. The model papers illustrate two ways of writing the paper; The Crash model is more relaxed and concept oriented, Shawshank Redemption is more pedagogical (teaching us the concepts). Either format is fine! As in every paper you write, analysis, not conclusions, paragraphs, transitions, grammar, and editing will all be part of the evaluation.
