Consider the following arguments. Analyze these arguments with reference to all applicable parts of our course material. To start indicate the conclusion of the argument, and then determine whether the argument is deductive or inductive. After that apply the applicable course material to provide a detailed characterization and assessment of the argument. < HINT: I am expecting quite a bit of detail regarding each argument. Simply indicating whether an argument is deductive or inductive will not be sufficient for full marks. >
I. A cash register drawer contains over 100 coins. Four coins selected at random were found to have dates earlier than 1962. Therefore, probably all of the coins in the cash register drawer have dates earlier than 1962.
II. As your instructor I have spent hours refining the definitions of the various fallacies of relevance. The description offered of each of them is as unambiguous as I can make it. On your next examination you will be asked to define several of the fallacies. So, if you do not define them in the exact terms in which I have presented them, you can expect your grade to be severely reduced.
