Problem: It is 1912, and you are faced with the choice of voting for William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, or Woodrow Wilson for President. Each of these men claims to be a progressive. Analyze and discuss progressivism. What did it mean to be a progressive in this era (roughly 1890 to 1912)? What motivated the progressives? What did they accomplish? Which of the above listed candidates best represented progressivism and progressive ideals? Which least? Why? As you know, Woodrow Wilson won the 1912 presidential election. Assess his presidency. Was he a progressive? What progressive goals did he advocate? What progressive goals did Congress enact during Wilson's presidency? Finally, why did the Progressive Era end? Why did Americans reject progressivism in 1920 and welcome a "return to normalcy?"
