Task:
You work as the facilities manager for a further education college which shares a site with the local university. This signifies that while acting independently, some buildings and the facilities to support these are shared.
The arrangements for facilities management are subject to the memorandum of understanding among the two organizations. This sets out which facilities are shared; the duty of the parties concerned and details the contribution by both parties to any costs when these occur.
The shared facilities comprise:
A) Porterage and janitorial support.
B) Cleaning services.
C) Front office and reception actions.
D) Security in and around the buildings.
E) Car parking management.
F) Room allocations and space planning.
As the facilities manager you are employed by the further education college, however sit on a joint committee comprising of both college and university senior managers and academics. This committee should agree any future actions which you propose for managing facilities.
You are concerned that your role is not fully understood thus; at the next meeting of the joint committee you have been asked which you are allowed to produce a report to better elucidate facilities management. You as well see it as an opportunity to highlight some of the problems that you face in your role.
Your report must comprise:
A) Your role as the facilities manager.
B) The relationship among business needs and space planning.
C) The constraints and problems you face in managing room allocation.
D) The health and safety and environmental issues that impact on your role as facilities manager
E) Why ethics play such a significant part in the management of facilities.
