American Art: Americans arts have always seemed to have little connection with everyday life. Architecture, painting, literature, and the other arts have been regarded as rather remote things, vaguely foreign, no direct concern of ours.
There have been many respected American architects, painters, and poets, to be sure, but their total achievement, regarded from the conventional critical and historical points of view, has appeared to be only a somewhat crude dispersal of the western European tradition.
