Although a typical ten-year-old would be assumed to be using concrete-operational thought, not all children are typical in their development. Any given ten-year-old may be typical, cognitively delayed, or cognitively advanced. What would you do and/or what questions would you ask to determine whether this child is pre-operational, concrete-operational, or formal-operational? What types of responses would a ten-year-old give to each task to indicate thinking at each of the three levels?
