Alteration of Turgor of Guard Cells

There are two ways in which the relative turgor of guard cells may be altered.

1. A decrease in osmotic potential or
2. A decrease in pressure potential. In both instances the water potential of guard cells will fall and hence water from neighbouring cells would move in.

 Alternatively, guard cells may face mechanical pressure from the subsidiary cells if they face a sudden change in their turgor.
