Problem: Discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of using seniority as a factor to determine shift preference or overtime assignments.

An advantage of using seniority to determine shift preference or overtime assignments, is that it clearly outlines the approach of consideration. Meaning the one with the most seniority will be able to determine their shifts and be the first one considered to work overtime. Seniority will possess transparency throughout the company when determining shift preference and overtime work. Another advantage is that seniority rewards loyalty; an individual who has spent most of their working years with one company or field is rewarded with the ability to determine their own shifts and is given the opportunity to accept or reject an overtime offer.

A disadvantage of using seniority as the determining factor of shift preference and overtime assignments, is that it could minimize the number of employees joining that company. The goal of a company is to attract and retain top talent, if seniority is the only driving factor for shifts and overtime, newer employees that may need flexibility in their schedule are more likely to leave the company. Another disadvantage is that seniority can create a divide in the workplace. Having a divided workplace can lead to employee dissatisfaction which may increase the turnover rates. Lastly, using seniority as a determining factor limits diversity in the workplace.
