Onsite internships and job shadowing will be provided to offer early exposure and practical experience, which research indicates fosters long-term commitment to the profession. The subsequent initiative is to introduce a structured onboarding and mentorship program, assigning a mentor to each new hire for the initial six months. This support framework enhances accuracy, confidence, and productivity while mitigating early burnout. Once these recruitment and onboarding processes are established, the program will transition to focus on retention strategies. These strategies encompass offering remote work options, flexible schedules, continuing education reimbursements, and clearly defined career pathways. This comprehensive approach addresses both the pipeline and workplace challenges that contribute to coder shortages. As noted by Meyers (2004), hospitals incur substantial financial losses when coding positions remain vacant or when coding inaccuracies delay billing.
