About Documentary Reader selections from James I, Bishop Bossuet & Thomas Hobbes

Each of these authors addresses questions of power, authority and the moral foundations of government. Yet they do so from very different vantage points. The most radical departures are found with Thomas Hobbes, whose great work Leviathan provided the starting point for most Western political theorists who followed.

Task:

Consider either Bishop Bossuet or King James I in comparison to the arguments advanced by Hobbes. Among the questions you might consider: what if any areas of agreement exist among these authors? In what respects do their views diverge - in either premises, conclusions or style of argument? Which of these arguments do you find most persuasive, and why?

Most of all interested in what you make of these theories. Work most of all on its content, the quality of your ideas and argumentation
