Nationalism in its various forms dominated much of 19th Century European history, from the Napoleonic Wars, to the 1848 Revolutions, and throughout the rest of the century. In your essay I would like you to describe what purpose nationalism served for various European nations, and how it changed from an early 19th century "romantic" ideal to a more sober and rational/realistic approach in the later 19th century. Address the history of at least two separate nations and how nationalism evolved from the first half to the second half of the century.
