Assignment
Objective: The goal of the persuasive paper is to: i) select a topic of immigration law, ii) do appropriate research on the topic, iii) champion a side on the issue, iv) present the side of the issue you most favor, v) address the counter points of view; indicating why these points of view fail or are misguided, vi) rehabilitate and summarize your principal arguments.
Structure: While this structure does not have to be followed precisely, something resembling the following is expected:
I. Section I: Introduction
• Attention getter comment
• Thesis statement (showing main and controlling ideas)
• Background - sufficient background that explains the issue, should not be an exhaustive legislative history of the topic.
• Sign Posts to inform the reader where your argument is heading.
II. Section II: Multiple Ideas in Support of the Claim
• Provide a topic sentence introducing the point
• Give explanations and evidence on your point
• Make concluding statement summarizing the point you just discussed and transition into your next supporting point.
III. Section III: Summary of some opposing views - those opposing views that are most related to your argument and directly stand in opposition to your argument.
• Provide topic sentence explaining that this paragraph will be opposing points of view.
• Present general summary of some opposing ideas
• Present some generalized evidence
• Provide brief concluding sentence for paragraph; transitioning into the next rebuttal paragraph
IV. Section IV: Response to Opposing Views
• Provide topic sentence explaining this paragraph/section
• You may recognize the validity of some opposing points, but then present how your position is stronger.
• Present evidence directly countering/refuting ideas mentioned in the previous section.
• Provide concluding statement summarizing your countering arguments
V. Section V: Conclusion
• Restate your thesis
• Briefly summarize discussion points
• Leave the reader with a strong impression; this is not the place to be passive.
• May provide a "call to action" in conclusion.
Format your assignment according to the give formatting requirements:
• The answer must be using Times New Roman font (size 12), double spaced, typed, with one-inch margins on all sides.
• The response also includes a cover page containing the student's name, the title of the assignment, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
• Also include a reference page. The references and Citations should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
