Problem: Progressivism in the first decades 20th Century and the New Deal in the 1930s both represented efforts to address particular sets of socio-economic issues by use of expanded federal government regulation and spending, but in spite of these similarities there were considerable differences between them, which presidents championed them? Why did Americans support these programs at these times, when traditionally they had opposed a large and powerful federal government?
