As an expert on language minority student issues, you are charged with developing a 3- hour professional development (PD) session for all teachers in your school (or school district, college etc.) on English Language Learner issues. Explain in approximately 800 words what you believe should be covered in such a PD, and why. You can choose your imagined audience (please identify this in your paper, elementary/secondary/ K-12/ community college, etc.). In your PD, I suggest you include:
Basic demographic and other information on the characteristics of today's ELLs in general and/or the specific setting of your audience;
Language acquisition and second language literacy concepts and theory that all teachers should be familiar with in order to understand the linguistic challenges that ELLs face,
Pedagogical approaches that mainstream teachers need to teach ELLs effectively, and
Anything else that you deem relevant and important.
Please use essay-format (rather than for instance a PowerPoint), clearly explaining for each component WHY you have chosen to cover the theory and practice etc. that you have included.
The main goal of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your profound understanding of the theory behind the challenges and effective solutions for ELLs and to apply this in an educational setting.
