TASK 2: Short response questions

1. List three potential problems you could encounter when capturing animals (to humans or animals)

2. What can you do to ensure the health and safety of all people and animals when assisting with the capture of animals?

3. Describe the method used to capture an aggressive dog that is loose in a large backyard.

10. What routines should be performed post treatment (include those related to the animal, cleaning and recording)? (2 marks)

TASK 3: GENERAL CARE

Identify (1) way of assessing good health in each of the species listed below. Your answer should identify a basic understanding of normal physical, physiological or behavioural parameters for each species.

TASK 4: Respond to Scenarios

Consider the following three scenarios. For each of these three scenarios detail how you would respond under the supplied headings.

Scenario 1:

You work at the local pound and a stray, but tame, queen with a litter of kittens has been brought in. The kittens have patchy areas of hair loss on their head and body.

1. Provide a detailed description of the normal physiological features, normal vital signs and normal behaviour of the species of animal that you are observing

2. A description of the method you would use to assist in the capture and restraint of the animal identified (include restraint methods and equipment)

3. A description of how you would perform the physical examination, through both a distant and close examination

4. Any WH&S considerations to yourself in the capture, restraint, handling and treatment of the animal. Describe how you would deal with any identified hazards

5. List any other considerations to other people, the animal or other animals that may occur during the capture, restraint, handling and treatment of the animal. (e.g. infectious disease, injury etc.)

6. A description of how you would clean the treatment and inspection areas following the removal or treatment of the animal. Include detailed instructions for items such as cage, bedding, fixtures and fittings

Scenario 2:

You work in a pet shop. One of the cockatiels for sale has a creamy discharge around the eyes and nostrils and appears to have laboured breathing.

Scenario 3:

You work in a boarding kennel. A 6 month old Labrador has developed bloody diarrhoea, vomiting and is lethargic.

TASK 5: HANDLING ANIMALS

For each of the following species, write a simple but effective step-by-step procedure for handling and restraint (for an examination to take place).

Include any equipment you may use to assist you with keeping this a safe and harmless process for you and the animal. Each article should be approx. 1/2 page in length and presented as though it could be displayed on a wall in your clinic. Attach to the back of this assessment.

- Rat (tame)
