Access to health care in rural Tennessee has faced specific challenges in the last few decades including rural Hospital Closures. Tennessee has had 16 rural hospital closures since 2005, the second highest in the nation only surpassed by Texas (24 rural hospital closures since 2005). There are currently 21 rural hospitals in Tennessee at risk of closure, constituting 44% of the state's rural hospitals. Tennessee has the 9th highest percentage of rural hospitals at risk of closure in the United States. Rural hospitals face the specific challenge of balancing community needs and financial viability of the services being offered. Tennessee has an age-adjusted breast cancer incidence rate of 123.8 cases per 100,000 females. The U.S. rate is 128.1 cases per 100,000 females. Since 2018, the percentage of females aged 40+ who reported having a mammogram in the past 2 years has remained around 71% in both Tennessee and the United States.
