Directions: You will need to write a paper on your analysis of prisoner complaints and the increasing litigation that correctional facilities have to handle. You work in the administrative office of a correctional facility and handle complaints about violations of prisoners' rights. A conference on prisoners' rights is shortly due. Your supervisor asks you to study a report about the violation of prisoners' rights and prepare a discussion paper for the conference. The paper should include an analysis of prisoner complaints and the increasing litigation that correctional facilities have to handle.
Tasks:
Prisoners have numerous individual rights while serving their sentences of incarceration. Although many lawsuits filed by prisoners, claiming that their rights are being violated by their conditions of confinement, ultimately are rejected by the courts, a fair amount of litigation does support specific and individual prisoner rights that correctional institutions must respect.
In this paper, you need to:
• Identify the trends in the most common prisoner issues and the ways in which the courts are handling these issues.
• Focus on the following issues raised by the inmates at your facility:
o Medical care
o Personal rights
o Discipline and due process
o Rights of women
o Access to courts and lawyers
• List the prison standards and rules on the five issues above.
• Provide innovative solutions that can be used to resolve these issues.
