A white compound dissolves in water to give an acidic solution. Addition of either NaOH or NH3 to this colorless solution produces a flocculent white precipitate that is soluble in acid. If an excess of NaOH is added to a water solution of this compound, a colorless precipitate forms that later dissolves as more NaOH is added. Addition of AgNO3 to a water solution of the compound gives no reaction. The solid shows no reaction with concentrated H2SO4, and addition of a barium chloride solution to a solution of the compound gives a white precipitate that is insoluble in both acid and base.
