A single recessive mutant,

In genetics, when a balancer chromosome is crossed with a single recessive mutant, there should be a way to tell if the balancer paired up with a mutant or wild type. But, I'm finding that this is not the case. The recessive mutation should not show up if its only on one chromosome. therefore there is no way to tell between +/bal and m/bal.
