A key part of the course is the computer laboratories which will use a package for simulating flow around aerofoils developed by Patrick Hanley . A course licence has been purchased for this package which entitles each student to install the software on any machine. The binaries have been uploaded on vital. Note that validating the licence requires an internet connection however. The software will be accessible on the university managed windows system.
Prof Badcock will be in attendance at the laboratory sessions to provide assistance on the lab and everything else concerned with the module. Notes will be distributed on vital in advance of each lab describing the objectives and methodology.
Initially the labs will be for familiarisation with the software, and a number of exercises will allow you to test out some of the theory being considered in the guided reading. Gradually the use of the software will switch more towards experimenting with the aerodynamics of aerofoils (i.e. what influence does shape have on the flow around the aerofoil).
