1.) Although Paine's writing is very much indicative of the ideas and values associated with the Age of Reason (i.e. "the Enlightenment"), are there any connections between the New England Puritan tradition and Paine's writing in Common Sense? What are the clearest philosophical connections between Paine and fellow Enlightenment author Franklin?
2.) Do you think that Franklin's goals for virtuous living are realistic? Was he a virtuous person, sticking to those goals at all times? How is his brand of "self help" similar or different from the self-help gurus of today (e.g. Dr. Phil, Tony Robbins, etc.)?
