These words begin the famous soliloquy from Shakespeare's As You Like It, and itserves as a metaphor consistent with the dramaturgical approach of Erving Goffman. Building on this metaphor, Goffman draws our attention to various aspects of performance, analysis of which allow us to better understand what makes a show a success. Using a symbolic-interaction approach, imagine that going to class is like performing in a play. Who are the key players? What are some of their most-used lines? What props do people use to be convincing? How might their performance break down, and what steps might be taken to save the show?2.
