Regulation of testicular function:

The hypothalamus, anterior pituitary and testes are interconnected in testicular functions. FSH from the pituitary stimulates spermatogenesis in the existence of testosterone. High concentration of testosterone is sustained due to the existence of androgen binding protein that is secreted by the sertoli cells. Such cells also secrete another hormone termed as inhibiting that inhibits the action of testosterone.

Testosterone secretion by Leydig cells is stimulated by LH. The testosterone has its action on various target cells. It diffuses into the seminiferous tubules and stimulates spermatogenesis and represses secretion of LH by acting on hypothalamus and anterior pituitary.

Hormonal control:

Male reproductive function is controlled by numerous hormones.

1. The hypothalamus of the brain controls the discharge of FSH and LH via its discharging factors.

2. FSH and LH stimulate the gonads. Therefore the gonads generate sperms and secrete the hormone, testosterone.

3. Testosterone controls additional male reproductive functions. It also aids to build up and maintain secondary sexual characters, like enlargement of larynx, deepening of voice, growth of hair and other adolescent modifications.
