Ozone hole:

Ozone loss was initially detected in the stratosphere above the Antarctic. The portion of the atmosphere where ozone is most depleted is termed as “Ozone hole” though it is not a real hole just a vast area of the upper atmosphere where there is less ozone than in another place.

Ozone-poor air can spread out from the Polar areas and move above other regions. Additionally, direct ozone depleted is also gradually rising.


Reasons for the Antarctic Ozone hole:

Scientific observations verify that the ozone hole created over Antarctic is due to the compounds of chlorine and bromine created in the atmosphere. Almost all of the chlorine and half of the bromine in the stratosphere come from human actions, the chlorofluocarbons discharged due to human actions transported up into the upper stratosphere.

The most general Ozone depleting substances (i.e., ODS) are chloroflurocarbons (i.e., CFC) or freon gases, nitrogen oxides, bromine compounds on halons, and methyl bromide. Such compounds are liberally discharged from air-conditioners, foam insulations, freezers, aerosol products, industrial solvents, pesticides and fire extinguishers.
